Happy Friday Everyone!
I’ve partnered with the Quatela Center for Plastic Surgery to bring you the latest beauty secrets not only for millennials.. but for those who want to take “anti-aging” to the next level.
There’s no denying that beauty trends change — especially as we get older. I remember fondly the simple days when 3-step regimens (a la Clinique) were the Tao of good skin care. But those days are gone.
Skin care has changed. And research shows that it’s changed largely because of millennials (those born between 1982 and 2002). According to an article on fashionista.com , millennials are still spending money to make sure “their face is a glow-y, Instagram-worthy dream. They’re just spending it differently than previous generations have.
So, what’s the secret? Whether you’re a millennial or just want to look like one, these beauty tips from the social media generation will have your skin ready for a night selfie-snapping, no filter required.
Tip #1: Prevention > Correction
Millennials are much more interested in preventing wrinkles than correcting them. This could explain why more millennials are getting BOTOX® Cosmetic. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons® , the number of 20–29-year-olds who had BOTOX injections rose 5% from 2015 to 2016.
But wait, isn’t BOTOX for wrinkles? And aren’t millennials too young for wrinkles?
Well, yes and no. BOTOX is used to relax and soften early-stage wrinkles on the forehead, between the brows, and around the lips or eyes. But it might help prevent wrinkles, too. According to the website of Quatela Center for Plastic Surgery , a plastic surgery practice and med spa offering BOTOX near Buffalo, NY, wrinkles are caused by repeated facial movements like smiling, squinting, and frowning. Because BOTOX works by temporarily weakening the muscles responsible for those movements, fewer lines are etched into your skin over time. This gives BOTOX an added benefit of being both corrective and preventive.
Tip #2: Don’t buy into anti-aging
The purchasing power of millennials has caused the anti-aging skincare industry to take a hit. According to a report from Mintel, sales in the anti-aging sector fell from roughly $2.2 billion in 2010 to $1.9 billion in 2015.
Rather than buying into a glossy magazine ad that promises youth in a bottle, millennials are more inclined to research their skin care. They look at reviews online, read or watch blogger testimonials (like this one!), and follow beauty brands on social media. Plus, with their affinity for BOTOX and other injectables, millennials are more inclined to save their hard-earned money for those treatments that they know will work, and will work fast.
Tip #3: Go big or go home
Millennials aren’t afraid of investing in big-time skin treatments if they’re going to give them the results they want. Medical spa procedures, such as lasers, injectables, peels, and dermabrasion, are ideal for millennial spa-goers who want to look as good as their Snapchat filter. Millennials have grown up watching their favorite celebrities get their cheeks contoured and lips plumped, so they see good results and aren’t afraid. It’s also a social event. As 1 plastic surgeon noted in an article on the website Business of Fashion, “The attitude [of consumers today] is more like they come in with their friends… and they look at it like upkeep. They look at it like: ‘I get my hair cut, why wouldn’t I get my BOTOX?’”
